For advanced pedal harp
A note from Anthony:
In Boulder, CO, I had the pleasure of studying koto - the national instrument of Japan - with Sensei Yoko Hiraoka. During the first lesson, I was enthralled by the tuning of this instrument, which is called hira-tchoshi. The instrument has 13 strings; the first two descend a perfect fifth, then the strings ascend in a pentatonic scale comprising the first, second, third, fifth, and sixth pitches of a minor scale. The thirteenth string ends on a scale degree two, which - if one just plays the open strings - has a feeling of timelessness and contentedness. This particular tuning is the primary influence of Ivory.
In a reflection of the koto and my first love, the piano, Ivory is a work that imagines the harp as an intermediary between the piano and the koto. The pain's western traditions and the koto's eastern traditions converge to create a western world under the emotional environment implied by the eastern hira-tchoshi tuning. As works for koto are strongly melodic, the eastern theme of Ivory takes on a singing quality, above a more western accompaniment As the piece moves in its journey, it broadens, then settles in a manner that hopefully implies timelessness and contentedness. This work was composed with the edits and suggestions of Ms. Chaerin Kim and Ms. Olivia Jageurs. It was premiered 7th January 2017 by Ms. Olivia Jageurs.
