Runner Up of the Future Blend Project Competition 2017.
For pedal harp
A note from Arthur:
For Nat and Shari to whom I am extremely grateful.
I can’t imagine finding better hosts, or knowing warmer people.
Surrounded by a thick foliage of cedars Your house stands
Pregnant with autumn
Written by a guest of Jihun whilst Basho stayed with him when returning from a pilgrimage to the Kashima Shrine. It features in one of Basho’s collections of Haiku put together whilst travelling. Modern edition can be found in The Narrow Road to the Deep North and Other Travel Sketches.
Translated by Nobuyuki Yaasa
Programme note:
I came across this Haiku whilst living in Rochester, New York where I was staying in a room with a great view of a beautiful, large plane tree. Staying September to December, I watched this tree change from summer to winter and it is an abiding memory of a happy and exciting time. The haiku resounded with the autumnal setting (despite the inaccurate tree type!) and the act of writing a note for kind hosts.
A three bar introduction foretells the structure of the piece (5, 7, 5). It starts out fairly rigid and rhythmically wrought before becoming much freer and atmospheric.
Written as a gift for my US hosts at the request of Rosy Moore who helped develop the piece and to whom I am grateful.
